UPON THE JOURNEY OF OUR LIFE MIDWAY
I CAME UNTO MYSELF IN A DARK WOOD,
FOR FROM THE STRAIGHT PATH I HAD GONE ASTRAY.
AH, HOW IS HARD THE TELLING WHAT A DREAR
AND SAVAGE AND ENTANGLED WOOD IT WAS,
THAT IN THE VERY THOUGHT RENEWS THE FEAR!
SO BITTER IS IT DEATH IS LITTLE MORE.
- Dante, In His Divine Comedy
